Can anyone identify this spider?

It looks a lot like a spider we had in North Carolina when I worked out there. We called them "Grand Daddy Long Legs." But I guess the technical name for them is Pholcidae: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae

The first picture on the wikipedia site looks similar to the spider in your post. My husband also suggested that it looks like a water spider they saw in West Virgina.

Hope that helps!

Wow Nat! Thanks! That might just be it. I just know that they are big, creepy and leave tons of webs everywhere! They had taken over our basement when we moved in. They came back this spring and I sprayed recently so I've been finding them more in the open. Blech!

Oh, it's called a "Satan's Spawn" or the slang term "Satan's Bug From Hell". I've never seen one in real life, pretty sure I'd die... Creepy Liz, very creepy. (Kidding about the name BTW). Seriously though, I would move far away if I knew that was in my house!!!!

Growing up in southern California we got these all the time living in our bathtub, for some reason. We called them Daddy Long Legs. They were actually the one kind of spider I wasn't scared of. My parents always told us they were harmless. I'm not sure whether that's true. We'd always just wash them down the tub drain.
